Abstract:Xu Can was a female ci poet at the joint of Ming and Qing dynasty. She was considered better than her predecessors at describing mood of dynasty subrogation, while this mood of dynasty subrogation was not only displayed in those ci poetries that expressed directly in words of ‘old country’, ‘native land’, or ‘former dynasty’, but also embodied in those with veil of elegance and frailty but actually vigorous inside. This is particularly worth savoring. The style of hidden bitterness of her ci poetry was not immutable all the time. Before the collapse of Ming Dynasty she was just focus on pain and sorrow in boudoir of average women, while after that it turned into a tactful style and full of hidden bitterness. Xu Can’s ci poetry, which shows a combination of vigorous beauty and hidden bitterness, should have disclosed the ‘beauty of passive virtue’ of genre of ci poetry better.
