31 The Xi’ning political reform and the composition of new party scholars in Ci poems
CHANG Qing-zhi
The new party scholars in the period of the Xi’ning political reform, were not only the subject in th political reform, but also the subject in the Ci poem composition. Their composition quantities in the Ci poem were not much, but possessed the unique emotional content of political reform sect. All of these common features were affected by the Xi’ning political reform. At the same time, by their radical reform spirit, they performed very well in the form innovation of the Ci poem and got one step ahead in theme development, deeply affected the old party scholars in the Ci poem composition, who similarly had the spirit to save the disadvantages. In the Ci poem history of the North Song dynasty, the contribution of the new party scholars was as much as the old party scholars to establish the mainstream direction of “in poem as Ci poem” in the Ci poetic circles.

Wangji has 35 Ci poems existed, which shows that his Ci poems have been preserved more than any other poet during Dading years of the Jin Dynasty. His works involve pride and madness; the contents of his Ci poetry are about life experience, being an official far away from home, and sadness of women wanting a lover. Wangji’s Ci poetry not only expresses the features of the flourishing age, but also the common feature of the poets in peace age. From artistic skills, Wangji is adept in showing his literary talent by using palindromes, the previous verse and thinking about the usage of the words, especially quoting classical allusions. However, the theme of his works is various but nothing exciting. The style is also various but not the leading one. So his achievement is not high. Therefore, in some way, Wangji’s Ci poetry, whether quantity or style represents the basic style and features in Dading years.
